DIY Home and Beauty Remedies

Homemade Jewelry Cleaner

  • 1 tablespoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon baking soda
  • 1 tablespoon dish detergent
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 piece aluminum foil

  1. Heat water in the microwave for 1 or 2 minutes.
  2. 2
Cut a piece of aluminum foil that roughly covers the bottom of a small bowl (like a cereal bowl).
  3. 3
Pour hot water into bowl. Place salt, soda, and dishwashing liquid into bowl. Place jewelry on top of foil and let it sit for 5 to 10 minutes. Rinse jewelry in cool water and dry jewelry completely with soft cloth. Discard solution after use and make a new batch next time.
  4. 4
According to, "this works well for gold-filled, brass, german (nickel) silver, and sterling silver. I have even cleaned jewelry with freshwater pearls, shell cameos and mother of pearl with no problem."

Another method that I haven't tried is:

Alka Seltzer Jewelry Cleaner
  • 1 packet (2 tablets) of regular Alka Seltzer (not flavored, and not alka Seltzer Cold Plus)
  • 1 glass
  • 6oz. water
Pour water in glass, and drop the tablets into it. Drop jewelry in the same time as the tablets are fizzing. Leave the jewelry in the solution for 5-10 minutes after the tablets have completely dissolved.
Remove jewelry and wipe clean with a dry cotton cloth. Done!

Clean Hood Filters

  1. 1
Fill a large heat-resistant vessel, like a pot or flat rimmed baking sheet with baking soda. I would suggest like a aluminum pan. Add enough water to fill without spilling over. Place in the hood filter and turn up the heat to a slow simmer.
  2. 2
This takes about 5-10 minutes. Since I placed mine flat in a rimmed baking sheet, I was able to assist the removal of build up with a toothbrush. I, also, with tongs flipped the filter over. The water will foam, raising the residue to the top. Rinse thoroughly.
  3. 3
    Repeat with remaining filters.
Permanent Magic Marker remover
  • toothpaste
  • damp cloth

  1. Cover marked areas with tooth paste. rub in a bit.
  2. Let set a couple minute wipe off with a clean damp cloth.
  3. May need to scrub a bit.
  4. May need to repeat to completely remove all traces
Another method is Magic Eraser. Works like a charm!

How to get wax out of your carpet?
Simple, get a paper towel and a iron. Make sure you have enough paper towel to cover the wax and make sure you don't touch your carpet with the iron. Set your iron on a low setting.and gently rub the iron over the paper towel til the wax starts to melt. The wax will melt right onto the paper towel. Keep repeating the process til the wax is gone.
Remove Deodorant "yellow" stains from clothing
Deodorant build-up and stains are very evident on white shirts because the fabric turns yellow. While they may not be as apparent on darker colors, they are there. The stains cause odor and stiffness of the fabric. Just some plain white vinegar will take care of the problem.

White vinegar ... mix a cup of white vinegar with 4 cups warm water. Dip stained garment in vinegar solution and scrub between your knuckles. If the stain is persistent, you may soak the entire garment in the vinegar solution for a couple of hours before running through a normal wash cycle. Check the fabric label to be sure it does not need to be dry cleaned!
Here are some other suggestions
  1. Dilute a half cup of ammonia with 4 cups of water and daubing the solution on the stain repeatedly until it is lightened or removed entirely.
  2. Take two aspirins … crush them and mix with a half cup of hot water. Pour directly on the stain and allow it to sit for a couple of hours.
  3. Baking soda … add enough water to 1/4 cup of baking soda to form a runny paste. Apply directly to the stain and work it in. If the stain is particularly bad and smelly, let the baking soda paste remain on the garment for a couple of hours then brush it off. Baking soda is very good for removing odors!
  4. Fresh or concentrated lemon juice … you may squeeze fresh lemon juice directly on the stain until it is quite wet, then add a spoonful of table salt. Rub between your fingers until the stain lifts. This also helps remove dark underarm stains on t-shirts and undershirts. If it is a bright sunny day, exposing the garment to the sun and allowing it to dry will enhance the stain removing power of the lemon juice.
     5. Oxi-Clean … this is a wonderful product for eliminating many clothing stains. Follow manufacturers directions.
      6. Borax … this is an old-time cleaning remedy that is still appropriate today – plus its a whole lot cheaper than some of the costly products on the supermarket shelves. Run warm water through the stain then sprinkle on a generous amount of Borax – don’t go crazy, but use enough so that you can see it like a good shake of salt on the stain. Rub it together with your fingers and then launder as usual.
To prevent these stains from your clothing, it is best to use deodorants that do not contain aluminum.

Try our natural aluminum free deodorants. This is not a antiperspirant. Available in many scents and also in essential oils. Available at or at our Etsy shop
